A child custody case is not always cut and dried. Contested cases often involve emotional and physical complexities, including domestic violence, coercive control, and child maltreatment. In these extreme situations, children need their own voice in the courtroom to ensure the verdict addresses their best interests. Child’s Voice Project equips professionals with child-centered strategies and provides child advocate attorneys at no cost to families or courts.
As a sponsored project of the Goodnation Foundation (which attracts resources to tackle our country’s and communities’ toughest challenges), Child’s Voice Project needed an updated website with improved functionality for greater impact on their three target groups: courts, families, and funders. The team selected e9digital as their agency for the project due to our energy, design aesthetic, past work, and client approach.
“We really liked e9digital’s orientation to the work. When we were looking at their portfolio in comparison to other organizations, it really ticked some boxes for us. It had a high-end aesthetic.” — Stef Sloan, Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer | Child’s Voice Project
e9digital has a wealth of experience in nonprofit website design, so we were eager to get started on this exciting and life-changing project.
Only 22% of nonprofit websites are designed for users with visual disabilities
Accessibility is an essential part of our design process. From the start of the project, our design team shifted the red bruschetta color on the homepage to follow accessibility guidelines. Every piece of the design had accessibility in mind.
Many websites with services like Child’s Voice Project have stock photography. It was important for the team to stand out from the crowd and emphasize the rights of children in custody hearings. Our design team incorporated hand-drawn elements to bring a childlike feel to the site without making it look juvenile. Additionally, watercolor images added emotional depth and a personal touch without relying on stock photography.
The website was built following UI/UX best practices, with:
- A top-left logo and clear navigation for ease of use.
- A mega menu with each target group outlined using an abstract paintstroke.
- A hero section that appeals to the target market with clear, crisp copy.
- Homepage sections that encourage visitors to dive into details on the interior pages.
- A footer with a split call-to-action (CTA) to address funders and families/courts.
“With such an impactful design, our goal was to not overwrite the copy. Rather, we wanted succinct statements that would work as a frame for the imagery.” — Jesse Cohen, Creative Director | e9digital
“Kudos to you all; e9digital has very creative, talented designers.” — Stef Sloan, Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer | Child’s Voice Project
The completed website has been met with glowing praise from the Child’s Voice Project team, who called out the design for its creativity, warmth, and effectiveness. “I really like the watercolor approach. I think it helps add some personal touch without relying on stock photos,” Stef Sloan commented.
With a clean user experience and child-centric visuals, the site now serves as a powerful tool for advancing the rights of children in high-stakes custody cases. After only a few months post-launch, Child’s Voice Project has seen a 121.5% increase in active users (people who spend more than 10 seconds on the site, visited 2+ pages, or triggered a key event).
